A fresh start in men's health

'Men's Health 2010: a fresh start' is the title of one day conference at Warwick University on 1st October 2010 being jointly organised by the  the Men’s Health Forum and Coventry City Council

The highly-interactive event will feature lively debate led by some of the leading experts in the field of men’s health and with your help will seek not only to investigate why in the 21st century men are still dying prematurely from preventable diseases but also to identify what can be done about it.

This event is particularly well-timed with the government’s White Paper on public health due to be published in the autumn.

Places will be limited and awarded on a first-come-first-served basis.

The Court Case
The conference will include a ‘Court Case’ in which Man will be put on trial charged with grievous bodily harm against himself. Expert witnesses will defend Man against the charges while the jury – made up of the conference delegates – will have an opportunity to ask questions before deciding on Man’s guilt. The trial judge will deliver the verdict.

Using comedy to engage men
Stand-up comedian John Ryan will provide a shortened version of his comedy routine used in pubs and clubs and designed to get men talking and thinking about their health. Coventry City Council has already begun to use this and many other innovative methods of engagement to promote men's health and raise issues such as testicular cancer, alcohol abuse and coronary heart disease directly with those men most at risk.

Participation
As well as being able to question the speakers and the expert witnesses in the Court Case, delegates will be able to take part in an interactive discussion in the afternoon to identify the next steps in men’s health in the rapidly-changing policy, practice and financial environment. Delegates will be invited to pledge their support for a new declaration in support of positive action to improve men’s health.

Who should attend?
The conference is aimed primarily at senior managers, commissioners, policymakers and practitioners with an interest in public health, men’s health, occupational health and the voluntary sector.

Registration
There is no charge for this event but registration closes on 22nd September. The conference will run from 10am – 4 .30 pm and a hot lunch will be provided.
