MHF opposes change to abortion law

The MHF is backing the Family Planning Association's campaign to protect the UK's abortion laws and calling on its supporters to sign the FPA's petition.

The MHF joins the Royal College of Nursing, The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and The Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare in support of the current law.

Campaigners against abortion are trying to use the human fertilisation and embryo bill currently going through parliament to reduce the time limit for an abortion from 24 weeks to 20. There is no scientific reason for this change and it will not improve the health or safety of the mother or the baby. (The FPA quote research showing that no baby born after just 20 weeks can survive.)

MHF CEO Peter Baker said: Peter Baker said: 'Nobody likes the idea of abortion and no woman enters into one lightly but the MHF supports a woman's right to choose. There is no justification for the addition of unnecessary time pressures on women who have had pregnancies diagnosed as abnormal, on vulnerable women in crisis, or on women who didn't know they were pregnant.'
