Construction workers warned about skin cancer

Occupational health organisation CBH has teamed with the Karen Clifford skin cancer charity - Skcin - to raise awareness of skin cancer this summer.

CBH - Constructing Better Health - work with the construction industry in which many workers are outside for long periods. There will be charity golf, comedy and roadshows.

CBH CEO Michelle Aldous says: 'In the UK, 10,500 malignant cases of skin cancer are diagnosed every year, with more people dying in the UK than in Australia. This is of particular concern to CBH as many construction workers are at significant risk to the disease. This fact has been further confirmed by the publication of a study in 2010 by Professor Raymond Agius from the University of Manchester. His report highlights a notable escalation of skin cancers in construction workers, warranting increased attention and preventative measures.'

Good employers understand that increasing awareness of health issues is an investment which improves staff health and morale and by reducing the risks of later staff sickness boosts the bottom line. Rachel Smith, Head of Marketing at construction company Polypipe Civils said: 'We are delighted to be working with Constructing Better Health and SCKIN on this very important cause. Over exposure to the sun’s UV rays is the cause of 80% of all skin cancers, and those working outside, such as construction workers, are most at risk. This figure, however, can be reduced significantly. The message is clear - if people take precautionary measures, such as wearing sun cream or covering up with protective clothing, they can help prevent this disease.'

The Karen Clifford Skin Cancer are also holding a Charity Golf Day on 5th September 2011  at Stapleford Park's Championship golf course in Leicestershire.
