Resources: other common work-related health problems

Work can cause or aggravate many illnesses, diseases and disabilities but these are the most common work-related health problems. Stress is covered elsewhere in the pack.

Asbestos

The greatest single cause of work-related deaths in the UK.

Asthma

Each year between 1,500 and 3,000 people in Britain develop occupational asthma. (Including  asthma made worse by work, this rises to 7,000 cases a year.)

Back Pain

The most common form of ill health disorders at work.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (or ME)

This affects some 250,000 people in Britain and is usually work-related.

Musculo-skeletal disorders

These are the most common occupational illness in Britain, affecting 1 million people a year.

Noise at work

Over 1m workers are exposed to dangerous levels of noise at work.
